The Fishing

Our main target will be tarpon. We stalk the bridges, looking for tarpon darting out of the cover of the shadows to attack unsuspecting prey. Throughout much of the year, we’ll encounter resident tarpon between 30-60 pounds, but there’s always a chance to hook a triple digit fish!

On a good night, you’ll have multiple chances to fight a tarpon. On some days, hooking one is easy, but getting it to the boat is always another story. Tarpon are masters at spitting the hook, and they’re smart enough to try to run through the pilings to break your line. If you can pull the fish away from the bridge, you’ll have a chance to bring it to the boat.

If the tarpon or tide don’t cooperate, or your arm gets worn out throwing 10- and 11-weight rods, we’ll look for the dock lights where we’ll find snapper, snook, and an occasional tarpon cruising the shadows to chase bait attracted by the lights.

The Boat and the Gear

All fishing is done out of a Cayo 180 flats skiff. With a 10 degree deadrise and a 115 hp motor, this skiff can handle any chop the bay throws at us, and get us there quickly too!

We only use top of the line Orvis, Sage, and Scott rods paired with Hatch reels.

Seasons

Tarpon can be found all year, but the most prolific action will happen during the shrimp runs. The primary run occurs in winter, usually between December and March, and the secondary run occurs in summer, between June and August. Our focus for tarpon will be on an outgoing tide, while we can fish dock lights on any tide.
